VOA News 2004-9-18

At least 20 people have been killed and more than 50 wounded Saturday in a suicide car bombing outside the Iraqi National Guard headquarters in the Northern city of Kirkuk . It is the latest wave of attacks aimed at Iraq’s police and security forces. In Baghdad, a car bomb exploded on the airport road as a US military convoy was passing wounding three soldiers. The military say, “ Soldiers responding to that incident were then caught in the second explosion, that killed 2 soldiers and wounded 8 others.” Early in Baghdad, a suicide bombing killed 3 Iraq policemen and a roadside bomb injured 3 people and US and British forces continue anti-insurgent operations in the cities of Basra, Ramandi and Talifa.

An Iraqi militant group says it has kidnapped 10 workers from a  Turkish-American company and will execute them in 3 days if their employer does not leave Iraq. VOA’ P has details. In a video released on the Arab television network al-Jezeera, 3 men said to be the hostages appear blindfolded kneeling on the floor, standing behind them is a militant wearing a hood who points a gun at each man’ head in turn. the insurgents, from an organization calling itself the Tawhid and Jihad Group, have demanded that the United Sates release all Iraqi women from jail within 48 hours or else the hostages will be killed American’s Eugene Armstrong and Jack Hensley along with Briton Kenneth Bigley were abducted early Thursday from their home in the wealthy Baghdad suburb of Mansur. All three are construction workers. The Tawhid and Jihad Group is suspected of being linked with Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi an al-Qaida leader who has claimed responsibility for a series of bloody attacks in Iraq and the abduction of foreigners. So far there has been no official reaction from US authorities to the demands.

Meanwhile French officials are trying to authenticate a message posted on an Islamist website claiming that 2 French journalists kidnapped last month have been freed and they are working for a limited time as reporters for the militants.

The United States has released and sent home 35 Pakistan’s hold at the Gunantanamo Bay, Cuba Detention Center. They arrived in Islamabad on Saturday where they were detained for further questioning. In a published statement, the US Defense Department says 29 of the men were transferred to Pakistan for continued detention. The remaining 6 were scheduled for release. A US military tribunal has determined one man among the six was not an enemy combatant.

The Untied States has lifted restrictions on exporting nuclear technology to India just days before the meeting between the two countries’ leaders. A joint statement said the deal allows US firms to export technology for nuclear power generation and commercial space programs. India has pledged to adhere to United States measures aimed keeping the technology save. In 1988 the US cut down on some technology exports to India after tensions sharply rose with neighboring Pakistan over a series of nuclear tests. The International Atomic Energy Agency had passed a resolution demanding that Iran immediately suspend its uranium enrichment program which can be used for nuclear weapon. More from M. Smith.

The head of IAEA, Mohamed ELBaradei urged the Iran to comply with the resolution, “It’s still of the view that, at this delicate stage of our investigation, it won’t be in the interest of Iran to do its utmost to create its confidence and continue its suspension, going back to the full suspension of its suspension, going back to the full suspension of its fuel cycle activities, as requested by the board.” The resolution also calls on Iran to give IAEA inspectors unrestricted access to site, information and personnel in an effort to establish whether its nuclear program is purely peaceful as Teheran claims. Iran says it is already fully cooperating with the IAEA, and inspectors can go where they like. The resolution which received unanimous approval from the agency’s board of governors, puts off a decision on referring the matter to the UN Security Council, until the next board meeting in November. M. Smith for VOA news, Vienna.

The UN Agency set a November 25 the a deadline for a full and definitive review of Iran’s nuclear activities but did not threaten Tehran within immediate sanctions. And the UN Security Council has approved the US sponsored resolution demanding that Sudan Council militia in Darfur and threatening sanctions against Khartoum.
